Usually you rely on pickups or you know. editing to if you make a mistake or or whatever happens like you usually do on film making days you can rely on on picking stuff up with this. You have to have a perfect take right from the start. So it's a little bit like live theater, which a lot of the actors in the in the movie are are experienced with. Dana and George absolutely spellbinding in the in the lead role so it it It works on every level and that came through just on the first reading the script of it for me. Yeah, I mean I. Did you get the good news that you're gonna be in it well, I think free auditions into the first audition was with the cast and director of the second audition was with Sam and then the third audition was me and. And Sam and then it was on two free weeks later, Yeah and I got a phone call when I was just the best day of my life ever pretty pretty intense. It's pretty demanding as an actor that the way it was shot. I mean, yeah emotionally and physically we did six months preparation of rehearsals before we start shooting and as an actor, that's you know very rare. Normally you just step on set and you start giving it a go. Where is this. We have a lot of time to sort of live and breathe the characters before we actually started shooting but it's just. Many different layers to what we did, you know a lot we did. you know rehearsing just to say along the sets when they need to be rehearsals with the director made George, you know, dialect coaching military training physical training. It was a long process, but every single second of it. I really learned a lot and I loved it well. I hope you continue to love it and enjoy the rest of the premiere. Thanks Mike. Thanks. It doesn't seem that long ago just in April, we started shooting and here we are tonight. so it's absolutely incredible. We're so excited. We hope everybody loves it as much as we do and it's just a fantastic night. What was it about Sam's vision? when he first spoke to you about this idea and how he will need to achieve it with you as well. Your reaction to that well, I think the thing that really interest me was this very personal story set against this fast landscape and obviously a huge historic event. Yeah and and if the intrigue of of the one shorts obviously, I had the same reaction as everyone else, how we gonna do this but you know when you put together a fantastic team, yes the challenge of. This movie happen and then seeing it realized is fantastic and very exciting. Can I just mention you extraordinary cast as well on this and in particular, George and Dean, who really caught this film so much is on their shoulders and was that an easy process in terms of finding those two young actors who who could do that who could achieve that brings such heart to these roles? Well, of course, it's a combination of an incredibly physical role as well and yes, I mean we. I wouldn't say it was a challenge in the sense of we didn't have a sense of who we wanted to play these roles. Yeah we did and of course, George and Dean both came through fantastically. it's brilliant. It's so great to get to talk to you about it and go and enjoy this wonderful wonderful evening. Sets Ride it's it's it's so nice to be so excited about seeing something that you're ready when you've had so little to do with it. So you don't really have a much of a concept of what the rest of its like you you're around for a week working really slowly on a 60 second section because there's so many bits and pieces and Sam has been some ambitious with it and they're 500 people involved in this action and you know it's a lot of just being patient and and and making sure that everything is in the right place. and then you think it's such a tiny fraction of this matter. I can't wait to see the rest of it. It looks brilliant. have you ever worked that way before no? I've never done anything that I mean, I've done one or two complex. you know large budget things but no I've no. I've. I've never done anything like this. Alright very well bit chilly but basically well, I mean come on it's December in England. Of course, it's a bit chilly in true. how excited I am about the general public and the Royals getting to see the film saving very excited. I mean we only finished a couple of weeks ago so to have gone from that to seeing it on the big screen and less the square. It's amazing how much you get quite tense towards the end. yeah. Yeah we. We will request up against the deadline but we we need we make it so it's been exciting and in terms of when Sam came to you and said, look this is how I wanna do this for as a producer, you must have been like. Oh, this is gonna be hard slightly. It was particularly the idea of the fact that we couldn't use any lighting that we needed overcast whether the whole time we couldn't shoot and bright sunshine. There were lots of parameters that Roger DP lay down early on which we're gonna make it tricky. So. Thank you yes and can you explain to everyone without giving anything away cuz kinda difficult when you try to remember where everyone's placed in this film cuz it's extraordinary performances. But how does your character find the story? So my character appears later on in the film and has quite an intense moment with George Mikan who is incredible in the film and I'm barking lots of orders at people and you know quite tense moment. Let's say yet one of the things that. Ordinary by this film overseas is the way that someone to execute the story, but but for you as actors and unsolvable that involved a lot of rehearsal time didn't you yeah and it was it was almost like you know. Sam is a master of storytelling and being involved in his theater background and things like it was kind of like being involved in a play. in many ways, lots of rehearsal and the camera was almost like a prominent audience member. I mean if you like and you could hear the camera sort of coming in a weird kind of way from a hundred yards away. And then you knew your moment was about to happen. It was it was a once in a lifetime thing to be a part of and and an incredible experience as an actor as well. So yeah. Mason. Well, it's great. I know it was a really potent kind of combination on the one hand. It was very easy and very relaxed. It's a testament to to to Sam's quality that that he can take on something this ambitious and intricate and just make it feel very very easy and because it's you know you're rubbing shoulders with people who either. Familiar cuz you're watching them or because he went with them before I felt you know it felt very easy and homie and like we were singing from the same hymn sheet, But there was a real uncanny ness and potency to I was I had a I was carrying a pistol that had actually gone through the song. The song I had filled glasses and job was that they were from from the time you know so there was you know and as much fun as it was to have 500 extras in the Middle of source, we're playing and you know I have explosions going off. Hey, it is great fun. He can't help feeling like a little boy making a warmer, but it does come you know with a with a pretty sober sense of juicy to the whole thing. so I'm I'm I can't wait. And then she went really well so wow. he's done so much prep you know what's great is that first is that first I work with the brothers the number of times and sometimes they would come in under shadow. Patients along that journey, you of which are are one of them. how much are you worried about all the other stuff that's kind of going on in terms of what is being shot. Do you know the extent of what they're doing in terms of not not really? I mean, I obviously read the script but you can't you can imagine that and your own ahead but it was just thrilling to finally watch the Amazon and then I mean I I was obviously aware that Andrew Scott was in a Mark, strong and Benedict and all these guys. so to see the you know the fully. A piece of work was amazing to say what their contribution was as well, but I mean we're all there to support Dan and George, who give absolutely spellbinding from moment. I think that's the thing that I took when I first watched it was obviously the technical achievement side of things is beyond impressive, the cinematography and all of the the camera work, but without the human story in the heart of those two deliver tenfold, it wouldn't be the film it is. The story that you were told these stories by your grandfather, It was an easy to. To the heart of the story that you wanted to write to put on film well, it was one particular story that stuck with me if I'm carrying a message and that was the sort of thing that wouldn't let me go. I just kept tugging at me. so and finally, I had the courage to sit down and write something with Christie. That was a story. I wanted to tell but then from then we kind of developed it and enlarged it and it became something completely different. but hopefully his spirit is still very much in the movie Crissy. What was the conversation that you had with with Sam when you when you both were sitting down to write this in terms of you know, because I imagine there's different. Is this the script kind of takes form? Yeah definitely. I mean we started just with a structure just an EB to see the journey and the characters and I mean that's the sort of seems instructor. you're gonna see on screen right now. We got that really early and then the script was just such a joy to work on. We're both passionate about the war and we both realized that we had such a kind of duty to tell the story correctly and and so there was never really any. There's no hardship and these two young gentlemen in particular and their stories and and focusing on. Our relationship both together but outside of each other, just talk about you just for a second like you're not here if that's okay. But but yeah, just look at you and talk about you. but I find finding that heart was was that an easy thing to really get a hold of around this incredible thing that you have created you know until undertaken of the film itself. Well, I think they both have huge hard Georgian Dean. I mean you know you can't act that you know and when you're encouraging actors to live the experience as much as active as they were in this movie you are dependent on. On their natural gifts, you know and there's something you know. there's a friendship that developed off camera and in a movie about friendship and brotherhood and and you know wanting to go home and family that was very important and it's something happened which you hope will happen, which is a bit of magic between the two of them. I don't think they're not quite shocked up together. You know I mean, yeah that's fine. but there was a bromance definitely Pepper Where did where did where did it start for you in terms of what did you? Owners producer on yourself we're going to the beginning. Sam Sam had this idea and we talked about it and I said well, why did you have to go right to get yourself and then he he got to sort of treatment together because the two of us knew Kristie from Penny Dreadful that we made a few years ago. we thought she'd be the perfect person to come in and work with him on the script. So that's why I started right. then you too. How does it feel to be here at the world premiere? From performance of this film that I know that you put so much work in beaten before a frame was shot. How does it feel to be here for both of you? It's it's just such a privilege. It's really really exciting like to be to be in London to be here when this when this project means so much to everyone it's just wonderful. It's I'm here with my family tonight and and that's going to be sharing it with them. So yeah, it's good. I love your face when you arrived and you were doing the pop shots. It was kind of like oh my goodness. it's so exciting. I love it and there's a lot of prep for you to what was your first day together like Can you take me back to that and kind of what you talked about what you what you watch on. Alright Well, the first time I ever met. George was on the audition. It was the last audition. It was a chemistry raid with Sam what are we talking about? you said you like history and I said, yes, Alright. it's all good and really we just read it so I didn't know how it went sort of skeptical thing ever. Alright and then when we left, it was one of those moments I was on the phone to my mom used to fund your agent and we were like. I'll talk to you in a minute. Yeah but it was good, You know and then we've done a lot of research together. We went to France, Belgium every day together every second and I'm very thankful that you know an actor like George, I got to work with and it's a good. It's a good kid. I love that kind of image of you, both and fields with like flags kind of marketing things. I'm going to camp. I'm gonna run to here and then I'm gonna say this bit and I'm gonna that's kind of what it was like. A bit for that kind of prep of how it would work as a choreography side effect. Yeah, we were we were alone on a lot of fields with a script planting flags in the ground, saying there's gonna be a trench here. There's gonna be no man's land here. There's gonna be farm houses and orchards and Woods and canals, and they just started off his post in the ground and thanks to the incredible design and art Department and extraordinary team that that became a world gradually bit by bit and each branch you know it felt like a giant team and and George and Denver in the Center of it and thank you for coming up. January 4, 2020 Format: Prime Video Stunning technique and talent in perfect form. Written and directed by Sam Mendes, this riveting movie has immense meaning because it was actually inspired by Sam Mendes own grandfathers experiences in WWI and based on his book Autobiography Of Alfred H. Mendes, 1897-1991 (The UWI Press Biography Series) and the movie was made in his memory. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Some profanity and F-bombs. You see dead horses and bodies (all prosthetic, of course) complete with circling flies, rats, and black crows. You see a mans life blood drain from his face. Spoken French with subtitles You see a man kill another man with his hands like in that devastating scene in Saving Private Ryan. That scene has haunted me for years. THINGS I LIKED: Fantastic cinematography by 14 times Academy Award nominee Roger Deakins. Surely the work he does in this movie will win him an Oscar. I loved the long sequences in the beginning of 1917 when they walked through the trenches. The entire film is shot and edited to make it look like one long, single shot that takes place in real time. Wow. Seriously, the camera work is next level. For example, the camera keeps running from the ground level, water level, and over the shoulder in incredibly realistic shots that make you feel like youre standing right next to the characters in the middle of all the action. The cast is very good and includes excellent performances by George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott, and Richard Madden. Some salty humor provided by Andrew Scotts character. Its the only time the audience I sat with laughed. The music provides a feeling of non-stop tension yet doesnt become monotonous. How they prepared the fields and landscapes to really look like war-torn Europe was truly amazing. I loved how Blake hurt his hand on barbed wire at the very beginning of his journey so that he had to continue babying it amidst his struggles. For a truly visceral experience, watch this movie on the biggest screen you can. I loved the way the movie began and ended. Perfect. Couple of comments: this is the latest movie from British director-writer-producer Sam Mendes, who brought us the 2 most recent James Bond films, and American Beauty way before that. Here he brings a WWI story to the big screen as it was relayed to him by his grandfather, who served in WWI. I don't want to spoil anything by revealing more of the plot. Instead let me make the following general observations: as the movie opens, we watch as Schofield and Blake walk to the General's camp, get his orders, and get underway, and after a couple of minutes, I realized that all if this was being shown in one continuous take. Then it became 5 min., then 10, then 15 min., and I thought to myself, how much longer can this be just one continuous take? Sorry, I'm going to to tell you. The movie is just epic on so many levels. There are some stretches where there is little to no dialogue and it is then how critically important the movie's sound design is. You may recall that in 2018 there was a fabulous documentary called "They Shall Not Grow Old" directed by Peter Jackson) in which WWI archive footage is restored gloriously. And in 2017 there was Christopher Nolan's epic WWII drama "Dunkirk. To me "1917" recalls both those films in the best possible way. Kudos also to Thomas Newman for the massive original score, which plays almost non-stop during the movie. "1917" went wide this weekend, and i couldn't wait to see it. The Friday evening screening where I saw this at here in Cincinnati in a mid-size theater was pretty much sold out, I am very happy to say. Winning Best Picture and Best Director at last weekend's Golden Globes will only reinforce the strong word-of-mouth this movie surely will generate. I am going on record that this movie will get multiple Oscar nominations (and then win them. If you like an epic war movie, you are in for a treat, and I would readily suggest you check this out, be it in the theater, on Amazon Instant Video, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray, and draw your own conclusion. *UPDATE 1/13/20* As predicted, 1917" won multiple Oscar nominations today, and I am going on record that it will win Best Movie and Best Director Oscars (as it did at the Golden Globes) January 6, 2020 Format: Prime Video Two corporals set out across no man's land in WWI to deliver a message to a company to not attack, that it is a trap. One of the corporals has a brother in the group. This is a long drawn out story of two guys trying to make their way through France. I was not as excited about the two man war play as much as the Golden Globes. Oh, BTW war is "last man standing" so there is your theme that wasn't worth two hours of gun fire. Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

MY real life hero. Easily the Best Picture I've seen this past year - and it wasn't easy. Until this week it was at only two theaters in NYC, so you had to make an effort; it was worth it.
After a little time to set the scene, the picture picks up steam and proceeds at break-neck speed to it's climactic ending. It starts right after Cpl. Blake gets his orders; go behind enemy lines and warn his brother's unit that they are walking into a trap, the hook being that Blake would try hard to succeed since his brother was at stake. From this point on it's like a roller coaster ride with no let up. I was exhausted at the end after the ordeal of the story. It's a war picture but it's also a story of survival, like "The Revenant.
AA Noms could go to George McKay, who i'd never seen before, for Best Actor and for whoever designed the sets - they were perfect as well as authentic. It is a British production which is fitting as Hollywood produces nothing of consequence anymore.
