Stars: Anne Hathaway; user ratings: 7,7 of 10 star; ; Country: USA; History; Writer: Mario Correa. Dark waters showtimes near me. Isn't this similar to that John Travolta film A Civil Action?🤔. Hah! It's indeed time Hollywood recognized that nazis are a JoJo reference. If you haven't seen this in r/worldbuilding, my goodness have you been missing out. Edit: okay yeah, so a lot like the Crimson from Terraria (I haven't played it) works by Lovecraft, the zerg creep in StarCraft, the Flood levels in Halo 3, and other such squishy places. Since posting this and seeing the positive response, I've been mulling over different extreme versions of this biome, and contemplating what treasures or terrain features it might hold. Blocks Flesh. We could have quivering masses of regrowing F L E S H that oinks and squeals and moans like Zombified Piglins, denoting an unspoken but disturbing link between the two. Cut through the flesh quickly with your axe or sword - makes a squishing sound when you walk on it. Can be broken down into 9 rotten flesh (and you can store your own rotten flesh this way, too. Creatures that die on a flesh block will cause a new flesh block to form where they fell. FEED THE MEAT. Oh yes, and jumping on flesh blocks would have a similar bouncy effect as jumping on a bed. Relatively safe landings! Bone. Naturally, long and twisting structures of bone could be found within, and sticking out of the surface like curved monoliths. Tumor/Growth/Cyst. This tough, dark block attempts to gradually overtake the surrounding flesh. Kept in check only by hungry Hoglins, who eat any that is exposed which they can reach. It's a delicacy! Grinds down into a rare alchemical component. Yeah, maybe this one is a bit far, but the concept of regrowing flesh would still be fun to play with) Digestive Organ. A fascinating color-shifting prize, this dangerous block will actually be harmful to you - you get the "poisoned" status while walking near it (very short duration, clears away quickly. Nonbiological entities and the undead are not affected. Ooze Source Block. Water and Lava, move aside. We have the nasty bile-blood of the flesh, and it flows a nasty green color. Sometimes when you break a flesh or tumor block, it will be replaced with an Ooze Source Block. Hair. What, are you gonna shave this thing? Growing atop The flesh in patches and bushes, coarse hair-like grasses can be harvested for a tough fiber that is an upgrade from your usual String or Rope alternatives. Locally sourced! Compound Eye. I think it blinked. These solitary, somewhat rare blocks (about twice as prevalent as Emerald Ore) always generate touching a flesh block - their yellowish sclera and multiple dark pupils are separated by baby-blue irises. Emits a Redstone Signal whose strength is based on the number of mobs (player included. who are within its sight range (16 blocks. This could either be an innate feature or you use the Eye in a crafting recipe, potentially with different ways to control where the eye can look based on line-of-sight. Atmosphere Fog. The fog takes on a muted yellow color, contrasting with the pink flesh to make an oddly disturbing, oddly serene pastel landscape of unbirthed sin. Sounds. Squelching, pig oinking, and screaming when lava touches flesh and burns it away. Burn it all away. Structures Spine, Ribs. Made of bone, very large, rather formless. The flesh has no beginning or end, and so its bones have no organization. Gastric Chamber. Pools of Ooze source bocks, you are free to swim in them if you really must. Hoglins and Zombified Piglins enjoy gathering at the banks, presumably to drink. Infection. Fungi of various sorts discolor the flesh here into an agitated red - red and brown mushrooms, nerherwart, the newer crimson and twisted ones make spotty appearances. Essentially a cave, the infection has born a wound-like hole that tunnels deep into the flesh to expose much that should not have been. Pores. Single-block wide rabbit holes that go down in quite a direct manner. There may not even be much down here, but all the same, watch your step. Mobs Parasites. Know how silverfish infest some stone brick blocks in a Stronghold? Yeah this is that, but worse. Any given flesh block might break and release a hungry beetle-like parasite. Zombified Piglins. They naturally spawn here, for reasons we are happy to have forgotten. Don't let them see you chopping into the flesh, they defend it like their own. Hoglins. They don't have much purpose yet, why not give them a favorite place to hang out? Mostly they enjoy keeping the growths in check. Ores Shard Deposits. No doubt a pain to the flesh, these special flesh blocks will drop a number of crystalline star-shaped gems that have value in alchemy, redstone, and weaponcraft. Items Bone components. Stairs, doors, slabs, you name it we have it, just don't ask where we got it! Suggestions, feedback.

Dark waters movie. Part 1 I think I must have been around 10 years old when I went out and bought a CD of the 1987 Robocop movie and sneakily watched it along with my sister Patty when our parents weren't home. That was the start of my obsession with blood and gore. I devoured every R rated film that I could get my hands on, not caring how trash the movie actually was, as long as there was visceral, gut-churning violence, I was game. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I thought I had a strong stomach for this kind of stuff, but I was wrong. Nothing prepares you for the real thing. Uncle Mitchell's head exploded, spraying blood and chunks of flesh and bone everywhere. There was an unwanted wetness on my face and I had to blink my eyes to clear my vision. I shook my head to get rid of the annoying ringing sound in my ears that accompanied the deafeningly loud boom of the shotgun and then wiped my face. By the time I fought my way out of the disorientation caused by the gunshot, I saw there was complete pandemonium in the room. Uncle Mitchell's boyfriend, Wyatt was emptying the contents of his stomach on the carpeted floor, some of the guests were hysterically screeching their lungs off, while Jonathan and his two lackeys in the goat masks were already making their way out the sliding glass door that led to the swimming pool. "Hey. Hey. You okay. Allison asked, her beautiful raven hair now carrying streaks of a vile shade of crimson. I nodded. "We're going to die. We're going to die. James, my brother in law whimpered on the couch to my left, as Patty tried to comfort him. It was my dad who brought some order to the chaos. Ashen faced, hands trembling, he staggered past his brother's semi-headless corpse and clapped nervously as he positioned himself where the murderous lawyer had stood a couple of minutes ago. "I know…" He croaked, before he took a deep breath and began speaking loudly. "I know it's hard, but this is not the time to grieve or lose our heads to fear. We need to think of a way out of this situation. What's there to think about. Spat Uncle Freddy. "There were 18 of us here. One less than half, that is, at least 8 need to die. Someone sobbed as he verbalised this. "17. Patty said softly. "There's only 17 left now. We can't kill each other. Uncle Brad, grandpa Henry's oldest son exclaimed. "This is our fucking family. We are not going to slaughter each other for some sick fucking game. What do you suggest we do, smartass. Uncle Freddy snapped. "Hold hands and walk to our deaths with a smile on our faces. Wyatt, Mitchell's boyfriend cried and there was a flash of disgust on Freddy's face. "We can try to escape. I offered. "Run in different directions all at once. They can't possibly have the necessary resources to track all of us down simultaneously and kill us, right? Run to a place where we can get a signal on our damn phones and get the cops. And what if they do get to us. Uncle Freddy asked pointedly. "What if they kill us all, huh? What then. I had no answer to that. "We can fight. Allison said, clutching my hand tightly. Everyone turned to look at her. "We can all go and buy weapons from the inventory shack and use them to fight our way out. It's too damn risky. Freddy muttered, running his fingers through whatever little hair he had on his head. "They are watching us right now. They could kill us on the spot if we tried something like that. Then what do you suggest we do, asshole. Uncle Brad thundered. "Because to me it seems like you actually want to play this game. How fucking dare you. Please. My mom begged. "Don't fight. Don't give them what they want. Freddy is right. I turned my head to see who had said that. Cameron, Uncle Brad's son in law stood up. "All the suggestions that have been made here are great, honestly. But it's too risky. We can't. … Too many variables…. it's just. I understand that, son, it's. Began Uncle Brad. "No you don't, dad. Cam cut him off harshly. "No you don't. … Brandy's pregnant. We are going to have a child. He put his hand on his wife's shoulder, who buried her head in her hands. Uncle Brad gawped at them as his wife cried out and hurried over to comfort their daughter. An uncomfortable silence choked the conversation out of the room and I sat there just staring at the soft, hypnotic flames in the fireplace. The wood crackled loudly and out of tune with my cousin's sobbing. "Hi…" Cameron said, awkwardly breaking the silence. "Umm… I think we need some time to ourselves. How about we all go to our rooms and take some time to think? There's still time, right. The tension was somewhat diffused at that and everyone began to get up. "Not me. Freddy said obstinately. "I'm staying here to keep an eye on the backdoor. Can't trust you all to not sneak out and buy a weapon. Jesus, Freddy. My dad said. "No one here is going to betray our family. You can't fucking know that. Yes I do. Whatever problems we might have, I still have faith in this family. You need to, as well. He didn't look like he was going to be convinced, but one stern "Freddy" from his wife and he reluctantly quit his grumbling and stomped up the stairs to his bedroom. The room that was assigned to us was on the ground floor itself, and I was listlessly walking towards it when Allison pulled my hand and dragged me off to the kitchen. I looked at her confused as she furiously starting digging through the various drawers. "What are you doing. I asked. "Looking. She replied as she stood on her toes to look at the mostly empty shelves. "All the knives are gone. There's nothing here that can be used as a weapon. Jesus, Allie. She jogged over to the stove and turned it on. "Wow. This works. Why? A gas explosion would threaten the administrators too. Allie. What are you doing. She stopped searching, then came over and hugged me. "I'm sorry. I was the one who forced you to come here. I wiped her tears away. "It's okay. Let's just focus on surviving, okay. She nodded. "Besides, Victorian mansions and murder mysteries have a very ancient relationship. So we can't exactly be surprised that this happened, right. She chuckled and buried her head in my chest. "Okay. She said, a couple of seconds later. "Give me a brief overview of your family, who's who and all that jazz. I raised my eyebrow. "Just to know who can potentially vote us off the island. I nodded. "Grandpa Henry had four sons. There's Uncle Brad, his wife and their two daughters. Both married, including Brandy who just announced her pregnancy. Then comes my father. Two children, me and Patty. Then Uncle Freddy. He has one son, Vincent, who came here with his boyfriend. Lastly there is, I mean…was Uncle Mitchell, and his boyfriend, Wyatt. So there's four smaller families in this large one. She asked. "6 people each in Uncle Brad's and my father's families. 4 in Uncle Freddy's case. And Wyatt. 6, 6, 4 and 1. She said. "And you need 9 for a majority. Which means that assuming families stick together, any potential vote would basically be a faceoff between our family and Uncle Brad's. It's the only mathematical possibility. I replied. "The entire fight would be about getting the support of Uncle Freddy's family. Do you think Cameron knew this. Allie asked. "Maybe that's why he split us up, to try and get Uncle Freddy's support. My eyes widened at the thought. "Fuck. What do we do. Let's take this one step at a time. Who do you think Uncle Freddy will side with. I shook my head. "I don't know. I mean, he hated Uncle Mitchell, thought that he was the one responsible for turning Vincent, his son gay, so he'll avoid siding with whichever group has Wyatt. But Vincent owes a lot to Uncle Mitchell and Wyatt. I added. "They had supported him when Freddy threatened to disown him for his sexuality. He wouldn't vote to kill Wyatt off that easily. So if we get Wyatt and Vincent along with his boyfriend on our side, we would have nine members. Allison stated. "Holy fuck, Allie. Are you really suggesting that we kill them off. No. She said loudly, and then lowered her voice. "No. But we can force a stalemate. Even if Cam and Uncle Brad somehow manage to get Uncle Freddy and his wife on their side, they can't kill us off. They'll still be one member short. And we can then think about what to do afterwards. Going behind their backs would be a massive breach of trust. I warned. "We have no proof that they're conspiring against us. There's no harm in being cautious. She argued. "Do you really want to be caught off guard and get killed over presumptions of family unity? This is our lives we're talking about here. What if our actions rouse their suspicions and become the reason they decide to act against us. I countered. "It's possible. She agreed. "But we really can't leave this up to chance. Cameron would be desperate enough to do anything to protect his pregnant wife. I mean, wouldn't you do the same. …Fuck. I swore. "How do we do this? We can't just waltz into their room. Too suspicious. Let's ask Wyatt to go and talk to Vincent and his boyfriend. They have a close relationship, it wouldn't be that weird if he's the one to talk to them. Allison said. "And then we can go and speak with Uncle Freddy to see where his head's at. We decided to split up. Allison went to talk to my parents and Patty about what we were planning on doing while I chose to take the stairs and go up to Wyatt's room. As I knocked on his door, I noticed movement to my right. It was Cameron, coming out of Uncle Freddy's room. He nervously nodded at me and scampered off. Not good. Not good at all. The door opened, and Wyatt's disheveled and puffy face popped out of the darkness. It was evident he had been grieving. "Hey Adam. He greeted weakly. "Mind if I come in. I asked hastily. He nodded and moved back, letting me in. A couple of minutes later I had informed him about our assumptions and intentions, his eyes growing more and more alert with each second as he grasped the gravity of his situation. "So you understand what you need to do, right. I questioned. "Frame it as a matter of saving everyone, and not betrayal, okay. He shook his head. "I can try, but please be warned. Vincent and Freddy have a very complicated relationship. That boy craves his father's approval more than anything. He could easily be manipulated into doing something he would later regret. Even if his boyfriend objects. Yes. And that would be enough to give them a majority and kill us all off. I understand. I said. "But it doesn't change the fact that we must try regardless. I got up, stretching my arms which popped loudly. "I'm gonna leave now. Go to him a couple of minutes after that. And if anyone asks, tell them I was just checking up on you. I shook his hand and slipped out of his room and hurried downstairs, to find Allison waiting for me, panic evident in her eyes. "It's your dad. She said, scared. "He's missing. What. I shouted. "Shhh… Please. She said, looking around to see if anyone was eavesdropping. "We don't know if someone from the family is responsible for it yet, or if he's just off somewhere doing whatever. Regardless, we can't let the others know, it'll weaken our position. I ran past her, ignoring her warning and frantically checking for my father in every nook and cranny of this damned house. I saw mom outside her room looking inconsolable as Patty tried to reason with her, with her decidedly frightened looking husband hovering around. "What in the fuck happened. I asked, slightly out of breath. "Mom said she went to the bathroom to clean up. Patty replied. "But when she came out dad was gone. We've looked all over but we just can't find him. Allison added. "Someone's got him, Adam. Mom cried. "They've killed him for the money. We don't know that. Have you looked up…" I was cut off by loud, angry shouts from behind me. I turned around and saw Cameron coming down the stairs, holding a piece of paper in his hand, with Wyatt begging and pleading along the way. The others were right behind them, scared, guilty, but also resolute. Fuck. Things just keep going from bad to worse. "Jesus Christ. James, Patty's husband whispered, his voice trembling. I bolted towards the living room, and quickly stood in front of the glass door that opened up to the pool. Hey. I shouted. "Don't fucking do this. Get out of the way, Adam. Cameron said, his voice low and teeth gnashed furiously together. "I told you. I told you. Wyatt shouted. "Step. Aside. I noticed a certain madness in Cam's eyes and realised with a sinking feeling he was beyond the point where reason or logic could sway him. "You can't do this. Patty yelled. "I'm sorry. But there's no other way. Said Freddy as he nudged Cameron. "You're killing us. Mom cried. "You're killing us. She walked up to Uncle Brad. "Brad. When he turned away in shame she pleaded to his wife. "Samantha. Please. Move. Cameron shoved me aside, making my ribs crash into the glass, and walked past me. "No. James slammed into him, and they both fell and started struggling with each other. Freddy tried to rush to Cameron, but he was held back by a desperate Wyatt. The others just stood silently gawking at the spectacle. "Adam. Allison screamed. "We need to make that paper worthless. It's the only way. She picked up a wooden chair and began swinging it like a club. My heart began to pound in my chest as it instantly became clear what she was asking of me. It would change everything, but it was the only way. My eyes hardened as I resolved myself to do the unthinkable. I walked away from the door, and towards Aunt Samantha. She looked at me, confused, before her facial muscles contorted into an expression of disbelieving horror as she saw the look on my face and understood my intentions. I pounced on her, shoving her down to the ground, before wrapping my hands around her throat and began to squeeze so hard my fingers turned white. Everything had turned into white noise for me as I focused on the unholy task at hand. It was a marvel that no-one dragged me off her. I didn't know it at that time but Allison fought like a woman possessed to keep everyone away from me, with Patty and mom doing their best to support her. The nerves in my arms bulged and the muscles surrounding them pulled and tightened so hard I felt they were going to pop out. Aunt Samantha thrashed around like a fish out of water, scratching at my arms to get herself free, but the fight slowly but surely left her. I squeezed, and squeezed, and squeezed until the light left her eyes and her arms dropped to her side, cold and limp. And then I squeezed some more, my fingers now digging into the flesh of her corpse. Part 3 M.

Omgggg mark and anne are my favs <3 <3. Dark waters trailer. Def for people who dont fish, this is way to common and ordinary for something I have cought lots of. most of what your witnessing in this is pretty standard. not ext ordinary. should have a Sonar with GPS, would not have to worry with depth alarm. wish it wasnt so dramatic. Dark waters movie trailer. For some reason I wasn't fully familiar with this story. I had heard of the DuPont chemical company and that they had carried out some really bad work practises with chemicals harmful to humans and the planet! However I wasn't prepared for how bad and how much they really knew and for how long, stretching back decades into the past with some pretty horrific chemical trial testimony.
The story to someone like me was extremely fascinating seeing it unfold before me, probably due to the fact that I really didn't know how it was gonna end. There are several really shocking parts to me that stick out. Firstly the amount of information that the company had and that they knew about the chemical in question. They knew that there were potentially negative effects to human health and due to the lovely fact that they were self-regualting meant that they could almost keep it to themselves and lie. It is surprising and not at the same time, of course a big company like this would do that. can you imagine the fallout from this if it came out in the 80's or 90's? The other shocking part is how long it took to get anything done. I don't know how faithful the film is to the real events but the fact that film more or less ends in 2015, is mind blowing considering it started in the late 90's. Makes wonder how I didn't know more about this?
Mark Ruffalo is brilliant, prefect role for him to deep dive into and really sink his teeth into. He has got one of those traits about him as an actor, easily likeable. so it is no problem getting behind his cause. Im a sucker for any "standing up for the small guy" type of story and this one certainly delivers in that respect. Not Oscar worth probably but not every performance needs to be. just a solid one.
That sort of leads into my problem with the film, for such a complex, fascinating, heart breaking and shocking story. this film feels a little under cooked. It needs more of everything. not necessarily better actors. but certainly a better script because it can get very clunky in places. I can imagine if your not enjoying this film it will get tedious. Potentially a bigger name director, not saying that Todd Haynes is not talented he is, directed one of my fav films "Carol" but maybe someone who is more inclined to this sort of story. There should have been more tension in the film or more driving force. something to keep you the edge of your seat, its called "Dark Waters" for crying out loud. I was maybe just expecting something a bit more like "The Insider" but unfortunately didn't get anywhere near.
Overall though I did enjoy watching the film its a good solid film 70% of 100, good acting from everyone including Anne Hathaway and Mark Ruffalo. directing was fine. maybe a little too slow on the pace now and then and certainly needed better script. I think its trying to hard to be Oscar bait and has fallen short of being a great film. None the less I would recommend it even if you do know the story.

So we'll see you for dinner tonight then. Veera asked Alice, the two women awaited by Russell and Kaha respectively. Both men had crates of gear from the now departed shuttle with them, and had set them just inside the gate while the sisters-in-law partook in their first truly relaxed conversation since meeting one another. The sounds of late summer activity in the fields and surrounding forests slowly returned after the disturbance of Cromwell's flight back to the Event Horizon. "Dinner would be wonderful if you don't mind hosting. Alice agreed at once. "I assume I can eat your food since Russell is still alive and all that. Where do you live? I I need to walk around a bit. she admitted tiredly. "Why don't we just come find you after dusk? I know where your home is. Veera assured her. "My home. Alice repeated, testing the phrase out on her tongue. "I suppose it's probably not much compared to that ship of yours, but so long as you stay with us I believe Antoth intends for you to have that space as your own. Veera explained, casting a fond glance at Russell. "You'll see tonight how much difference a human can make in a boring room like that. Are you alright? Are you still nervous. I think I can see why my brother fell for you. You're real sweet, Veera. Alice replied quietly. "I am nervous, of course, but I think I just need some sleep and time to process everything. There's already been so much I've seen and done and I've barely set foot inside the gates. I don't know how I'm going to handle all this, not to mention all your crops and the forest and. Ahem. Io's voice reached them both. She was dressed in her librarian's garb again, looking over the rim of her glasses at the elder Winters. 'Alice, may I make a suggestion. Ah, sure? Go ahead, Io. You are not me. Ooook? That wasnt technically a suggestion. Alice cocked her head while Io shrugged, figuring the meaning was obvious. 'Cheeky, arent you? I shall explain, oh excitable sister. There seems to be this insistence about you that you catalog each and every interaction and event you've experienced so far. I can fully understand and appreciate the sentiment. But even if you were well rested this would be difficult for you, Alice. Those bags under your eyes do you no favors. Well that's brutal. Sorry I left my makeup back on the Event Horizon. Is she always like this. Alice called to her brother, rubbing at the skin under her eyes. He and Kaha turned their heads her way. "Only when she's right. Russell replied calmly, returning to a discussion with the sun guard which seemed to center around his sword. The Cauthan warrior was most excited at the opportunity to examine it up close, testing the edge with his pads and claws. 'Isn't he sweet, mein barbar. Io asked with a fond smile. "So everyone else is used to the AI making bedroom eyes at my brother. Alice requested as though she'd suddenly been dropped into Oz. “Alright, thats cool I guess. ” "We only have one room though. Veera replied in confusion. Alice brought a hand to her forehead. "I'll take that as a yes; everyone is in fact used to it. Well, when in Rome I suppose. So Io, what were you trying to say. What's a Rome. Veera interjected with excitement. 'Veera, I will be sure to give you a detailed review of ancient Rome once our dear Alice is settled in. Now what I was saying is that I have been observing, recording, and cataloging interactions with and among Veera's people for almost a year now, Alice. My memory banks are full to bursting! And may I say that it has been a joy, even from the shadows. Io added with a wide, genuine smile sent Veera's way. She did not want to speak about her as if she were not there. The AI remembered her lessons well. "And it's been wonderful to have you along, especially now that you're out in the open. Veera replied in a friendly manner. "But let's see Alice to her home so she can rest, alright? Then Rome. Of course. Alice, give me some time and I will ensure that all of this information is made available to you. Io promised, making a show of files and folders flying around her as if a cyclone. She neatly corralled the paper storm into a large omnibus text for effect, even crafting herself a sorcerer's hat momentarily. 'I would be most upset if you and your fellows aboard the Event Horizon were to simply study this village as a curiosity. That ground has been tread already and there is so much yet to do. Your brother and I owe these people a debt we can never repay. Io, any debts have been repaid many times over. Veera insisted hotly, her tail waving about. Io shifted to her Cauthan form and gazed compassionately at Russell's wife. 'In matters of the flesh, yes. In war and strife and food and we have. But can you place a value on Seil's gift of life, Veera? Or the comfort you have brought to the Lieutenant's troubled heart. I cannot. she admitted after but a moment of consideration. Io nodded sagely and waved her digital feathers at Veera. 'Then you understand why my debt to you and your people remains. Alice, learn of these Cauthan in preparation to help them, not study them. We have much to offer and I firmly believe they will make the relationship symbiotic given the opportunity. Do this for me and I'll ensure you have doctorates coming out your ears. Alice blinked once in Io's direction as the AI changed back to her human form. She blinked again at Veera, then her brother and Kaha. Her mouth opened, but she closed it in consideration. Eventually she addressed Veera. "Much has happened in the last year, hasn't it. That is probably a bit of an understatement, Alice. But yes, much has happened. Veera's reply had Alice nodding with a heavy sigh. It felt like good drowning, if such a thing were possible. "Ok. I'll reserve judgment then; and I'll think about what you said, Io. Anything you send my way I'll be sure to review. the xenobiologist promised. 'Wonderful! I think you'll have much more fun if you don't worry about documenting everything. Besides, that's what I'm here for! Oh, a word of warning. Thantis enjoys his tea quite hot. Veera rubbed her nose, indulging in a bit of a chuckle at the old priest's expense as Alice hummed and took the time to look around her. She could see houses and temples, scorch marks and new construction. "Hey, Russell. Yeah, what's up. Her brother asked, leaving Kaha with his sword momentarily. "Look I don't want to pry or anything, or maybe I'll just ask other people 's asking me to change things here. she told him, immediately set at conflict by the AI's suggestion despite its appeal. Her brother smiled. "She's listening to us right now but not saying anything…" he paused, glancing around his visor with a smirk. "Because a certain someone understands privacy now. I bite my well-manicured thumb at you, knave. The AI retorted haughtily. "She knows Shakespeare. Alice gasped. "She knows I'm right. Russell clarified. "Look Alice, I'm not a smart guy, alright? That's why I ended up in Omega and you got into Beta. Shut it, you big doofus. she whispered. "You know it's true, sis. I know how things had to be with the pacified worlds, how hard you had to work just to get a glimpse of those planets. Now you're in the middle of one that I literally dropped into. My first day at this village I fought Kaha and his brother, may he rest in peace. I've been changing this village since I got they've been changing me. It was inevitable. he was more than willing to admit, placing a hand on Veera's hip as she snuggled up next to him. "If you try to keep everything just so and study it all you'll drown, Alice. Russell, I get what you're saying but if we just drop a bunch of auto-irrigators in or hand them a pallet of pure iron ore then. Why can't we now that there's a treaty? Don't you think it's time we did something good for once. Her brother asked, looking skyward to indicate it wasn't her specifically he was talking about. "How many aliens have we killed in the name of some bullshit order? How many humans…died? Maybe we should be the good guys this time, show those antler-heads our version of divine intervention. They deserve it. You can't do that, Russell. Alice exclaimed. "Why not. They're a million trees, and chesko, and hyrven, and aquila, and fungi, and grasses, and all sorts of stuff you can put into a glass case and preserve. The only reason I didn't give them all guns is because I feared for Io and Veera's lives if we were ever found and I was strung up for violating first contact protocols! Alright, Io, that and materials constraints. Alice, do you have any idea how many good Cauthan died here that I could have saved if I didn't have to give a fuck. Darling please! She is your sister, not Vash or that Ghaelen. Veera insisted strongly, soothing her mate as he became more and more passionate. "She has only known us a few hours. You are being unfair to her. Alice looked on in stunned silence as Russell regarded the ground beneath his boots. The Jumper took a deep breath and faced her again. In her eyes it was nothing short of a miracle. "Yeah. Yeah you're right. I just got excited, I guess. Natori liked Io, thinks she's the greatest achievement in human history. You and Alice get along and it's been half a day. I just…do as Io says, Alice. Learn about them, help them. They deserve this. he repeated. "Ok. she replied simply. "I'll learn and I'll speak with Natori. But if you think I'm giving men with swords, spears, and shields firearms before training them, you're out of your mind. Do they have crop rotation. What. Veera requested. "Exactly. Alice yelped. "Russell, the day I feel you don't want Cauthan Jumpers at your side is the day I give them Aegis armor. Until then I will do things my your advisement, of course. Alice insisted, suddenly the firey and commanding one in the sibling dynamic. Even Io had a hard time keeping track, moving her head back and forth as if spectating a ping pong match. "I didn't fucking say that. Russell hissed, rolling his eyes. "But you're thinking it! me get up to speed, alright? You and Io were right about one thing, this won't be like my masters. That's something I'll have to get used to. But this isn't your fight, Russell. This isn't dad's yet. Why don't you trust the smart ass who got into Beta for once, alright? If you're suggesting what I'm pretty sure you are this will require a lot more finesse than you're capable of, you hardhead. she explained with a sisterly smirk. "Yeah, sounds good. Sorry. Russell apologized sincerely. Alice embraced him. "Do you have any idea how different you are than when I last saw you. She whispered, casting an appreciative glance at Veera, whose feathers were almost fully flared. "No. he answered simply. "Then believe me when I say that I understand how important they are to you. And also believe me when I say that if you go around demanding stuff like that you'll get nowhere. Give it time like I said, Russell. The Event Horizon is here. We aren't going anywhere for a while if what you found is what you think it is. me take a nap, please. Both Winters children had a laugh at that, with Russell placing a hand on Alice's shoulder. The silent look between them was clear. He would follow her lead, at least for the time being. "Hey Kaha. Yes, Winters. Take good care of 's real important to me. Of course. She is our honored guest. Miss Alice, are you ready to be off. I think so. Thank you very much. See you three later then. We'll come find you. Veera promised as she, Russell, and Io waved a casual goodbye, heading north along the side road while Kaha escorted Alice down the main thoroughfare towards the east gate at the far end of the village. "Boy that's going to take some getting used to. Alice admitted. "What is that. Kaha asked politely. "My brother just having a place, with a wife, and asking me over for dinner? Definitely a new look for him. I see. was all Kaha could provide on that particular subject. Alice was not deterred in the slightest. "So what is this building here on our right. She inquired as they strolled towards the village center. She tried to wave in a friendly and non-threatening manner to villagers that looked her way. "That is the temple of Valta. It is where our hunters conduct their business and trade. Just down the road there is the temple of Tyrdus, where Nerazek and the others work wood, leather, and metal. Alice hummed in acknowledgement, taking note of what looked like more fire damage and recent repairs to Ratha's temple. That recalled to her mind something her brother had mentioned. "Kaha, my brother said that he fought with you when he first arrived here. Is there a story behind that? Is it customary. Heh, that seems like such a long while ago. Kaha mused. "I do not mind sharing the tale with you, Alice Winters. For he is your brother and it was a humbling moment for me and my brother in arms. So what happened. Alice's eyes lit up. "We were preparing to deliver corporal punishment against Veera. She was a scrawny thing back then, unloved and ridiculed by many for her parentage. Kaha began. Alice's jaw tightened but she held a neutral face, unwilling to project her cultural norms into a situation far in the past. "What was her crime. The human wondered. "Your brother. It seems he appeared near her farm and befriended her. When he arrived at our gates the prior priest of Seil, my master, ordered her attested and flogged for leading an agent of Kel to our doorstep. I. I see. Do you mind if I ask what happened to your former high priest. Alice ventured. Kaha made a complex, circular gesture over his chest with his hand, holding the entirety of her gear in the other. He was quite strong. "May he rest in peace at Seil's side. Vash did not survive the raid on our village this past winter. The what. No one has told you. Kaha replied, equally as shocked. haven't. Alice replied as they finally came to the village square. Kaha gestured with his head towards a large and empty plot of land to the right. "There, to the south. Once a proud temple to the giver of life stood there. It burned that night and Vash perished with it. I did not like your brother, Alice Winters. He defeated me using his impenetrable armor the first time we met. I thought it was his very skin. Then we fought as equals at the harvest festival after he threatened our leader. He was victorious but honorable in his win. Still I did not like him. He chose a half breed female for his mate, was impudent to the point of disbelief, and had no respect for Seil. But that night, when that unholy host came for us…" Kaha you don't have to. I'm sorry to bring up such. No, Alice. the sun guard interrupted her gently, leading her through thin crowds. "That was a happy occasion in some ways. My high priest was dead and my brother fallen in combat. I will remember those moments until my dying day. Most of all I was afraid, afraid that my sacrifice and those of my fellows would be in vain. Your brother did not even stop to help me on his way to destroy them. Instead he lent me his an unfortunate corpse. Kaha chuckled deeply at the memory, a sentiment Alice certainly did not share. "He's got a good arm on him and he saved my life. Oh, that is the temple of Meylith, by the way, that large building there down the road on the right. You will find Gentia, her acolytes, and the village granary inside. Thank you. the human replied quietly, adjusting the strap of her duffel on her shoulder. They had since passed through the square, with Alice taking note of what looked like very recently sluices with running water. They flowed slowly along the main avenues where Cauthan drank freely and occasionally washed their paws. The source of the flow seemed to be somewhere in the northeast of the village. "Would you like me to carry that for you as well? What is it made of. Kaha asked after her bag as though he'd not just spend the last several minutes regaling her with tales of doom and heroism. "It's know I actually don't know. Alice realized. "I guess I take a lot about modern human living for granted. It's water resistant and very durable at least. Mmm, perhaps it is comforting that not even you know everything? Antoth says you are like Thantis and Xan, a female of learning. I am. I do not mean to disrespect, but I have always found there are some things you cannot know until you trade blows with another. Have you ever fought before, Alice. No, not since I was a child, you know. So human children are rough and rambunctious as well. Alice laughed endearingly as she considered human children and Cauthan cubs playing around together. "Yes Kaha, we are. Perhaps that is why your brother is the way he is? Yes this is good, very good! More warriors and more scholars. Our village will thrive. Just look at Veera. I was actually going to ask about that…" It is rather shameful upon reflection, Alice Winters. Kaha told her, taking pause to point out the narrow street that would lead to Alyra's temple, nestled within the southeast corner of the village. "Veera's mother was not one of our people. When she lost her mother and then her father, many, myself included, wished she would just disappear. We did not take into account who she was, only what she was. That is. disturbingly similar to much of human history. Alice admitted freely. "Is that right. Kaha mused, adjusting his hold on the crate as his arm muscles bulged under his armor. "I suppose that is also comforting in some ways. But Veera is a member of your guard now, right. She is, Alice. I cannot say when it began for sure, but when a female kills to defend your home her fur patterns cease to matter so much. Your brother has changed more than a few things in our little village, mostly for the better. We all eagerly await what sort of surprises you will bring to us, Alice. Here we are now, and please allow me to apologize again on Antoth's behalf. I understand it is not the most pleasant of dwellings. Where would you like this. Alice took a moment to look around the single room with a dirt floor, small fire pit, and sod roof. She'd waved politely to the Cauthan standing guard at the east gate nearby, figuring he was technically her neighbor. "Just in the near corner there is fine, thank you. she advised as Kaha deposited her equipment to the left. "Is there anything else you need? Should I send for the disciples of Tyrdus regarding a bed and furniture. No no, I've got the bed covered for now. Alice insisted, immensely thankful for her A-MACS. Desk, pen, paper, recorder, video, and audio, she had it all and more right there on her wrist. Kaha was looking her over intently. do you mean you have a bed? You are so lightly burdened. he worried. "We cannot have you sleeping on the ground. Oh, that's this. She exclaimed, setting down her personal duffel and the pack she'd carried on her back. Kaha watched will great curiosity as she removed a cylindrical something from where it rested on top of the duffel, held in place during transit by the hand straps. Alice looked about the space for a moment, chose the far right corner, and laid it down on the ground. She removed some sort of thin covering from each circular side and stood back. "By Seil, what is going on. Kaha wondered, walking over to her side and watching as the cylinder unfolded into a long rectangle, inflating to a height of about five inches. A bulge at the far end marked where one was meant to lay their head. "That's where I'll be sleeping! Don't worry, I have a thermal sleeping bag too. That's just for support. You guys don't have many bugs, do you. Alice requested. Kaha waited as the translator worked it's magic. "Hmm? No, I do not believe they will be an issue. Simply keep your floors dry. Huh. Alice tilted her head. "A dry floor is a clean floor. You will see. Kaha assured her. "I will send word to Nerazek that you require furs for your atform? I know not what you would be doing in a bag; one cannot rest in such a way. Oh and I'll ask he send someone to repair the gaps in the walls. Winter will be here before you know it. Rather than make a stink or refuse his generosity, Alice bowed politely. "If it's not too much trouble that would be very kind. But of course! Thank you for being flexible. Can I help you with this contraption here. Kaha offered, pointing to the box of tech. Alice shrugged. "I'll be able to handle it just fine, but if you insist you could 's see. This one will sit right here. she directed the folded communications array to a position just inside the doorway, which was covered by a weathered chesko pelt. "And that one in the box there will go outside somewhere the sun can reach out, thanks. What does it do. It will take sunlight and use it to power my equipment, like this handy thing I'm using to talk to you right now. Alice explained. "By my scales and feathers, to imagine such abilities would exist? To harness Seil's light to power your metallic…contraptions. Kaha almost seemed concerned at the idea. Alice sought to set him at ease. "It won't harm Seil in any way. It's just like the plants in your fields that need light to grow. Is that right? But it's such an ugly looking plant. Alice couldn't help but laugh at his description, offering her hand to shake. He took it strongly and she got another dose of pad, fur, and scales all at once. "Kaha, I'm very thankful for all your help but right now I desperately need some rest. I will set these things up once I've recovered a bit. Could I ask you to do one thing for me. But of course. The Cauthan replied, feeling as though he'd not done much. "Could you let the guard know, or have a note made or something asking your fellows to not touch the equipment? It's very sensitive and that solar array will have to be outside of this room in order to work. Mmm, I understand. I will ask Thantis. He is much more proficient in our written language than I. The guard force will be informed as well. We will ensure no one harms themselves or your belongings. Then you'll have my thanks, Kaha. And thank you for your kind welcome as well. I think I can safely speak for all of us when I say that we are hopeful regarding your presence here. Selah, Alice Winters. Selah, Kaha. The sun guard smiled warmly at her use of his language, holding aside the door flap and departing into the streets. With privacy finally established Alice could keep her eyes open no longer, collapsing fully clothed onto the rugged foam mattress and closing her eyes. While she felt a measure of pressure regarding the hopes Kaha had expressed, that feeling was far overwhelmed by excitement and comfort. They had accepted her brother, they had tentatively accepted her, and she was certain that even a basic application of human knowledge and technology would be impactful. Thoughts of efficient stoves, improved crop yields, and the beginnings of medical exploration soon gave way to peaceful slumber. "Mmm, wonder how Lachlan's doing. Ya know, I think I should have been expecting that. MacGregor declared, watching as Ursol immediately examined his bedroll once it had been laid out. The boy's young mind accepted the alien developments quickly while Sentaura stood back apace, only allowing him free reign thanks to Lachlan's description of the item as his bed. It wasn't long before Ursol found it to be quite soft and comfortable, testing the surface with his claws as his tail wagged rapidly back and forth. "Comfy. He exclaimed, curling up and making a show of snoozing. "Ursol. Lachlan reached out a hand but stopped himself just short of her shoulder. The soldier cleared his throat and returned his arm to his side. "It's alright, Miss Sentaura. If it's all the same to you I'm happy he's goin' for the bed and not my weapons. I have trigger locks and other safeties I'll be usin' in the meantime, but I'd much rather you teach him that my guns and knives aren't toys. Hmm, that reminds me that I should be getting him a knife of his own soon. the Cauthan mother mused as her son, worn out from the excitement of the day, succumbed to his own ruse and fell asleep. She and Lachlan watched as his tiny feathers moved subtly and his breathing became steady and easy. "Really? A knife at his age. Lachlan asked. "He wants to become a hunter, go out and find his…would you come with me, please. Sentaura requested, motioning to the other room of the one story dwelling. It was well made with tight fitting logs and a sloped, thatched roof. Within there was a small collection of newly constructed furniture: a couple chairs and a table, a cooking pot, wooden cookware and dinnerware, and some fuel in a pile just inside the door. Lachlan could see easily enough that past the brown, furry pelt that separated the rooms was Sentaura's bedroom, where a simple set of shelves held the rest of her possessions. They were few, but contained two well-made, black fur cloaks. "Is such a thing acceptable. The human asked with concern. "I only wish to speak with you, privately. Then lead on. he agreed, soon finding himself standing awkwardly just inside the doorway while Sentaura turned away from him, walking to a small wooden shrine where nine carved bone idols sat. "This was all I could save from the raiders and the fire. When I was seventeen he presented me with these idols. He carved them himself from chesko bone and antlers he hunted. I did not give him an answer that year. A year later he gave me a cloak of his own making. I had already decided to say yes. Ursol was born a year later. Sentaura related quietly, taking a deep and quaking breath before turning to face the human soldier. Her feathers shook and waved in a new pattern, one that the human could only guess was great sadness based on her tone of voice. "Until my last breath I will regret not giving my son one more year with his father. MacGregor found it impossible to swallow, instead running his thumb and index finger along his moustache and over the stubble of his nascent beard. The Cauthan mother carried on. "While I would never suggest you and the female you came with be turned away, know that I only opened my home to you on account of my son. Sentaura left her proclamation at that, volumes of words left unsaid. Lachlan did not question her. "I understand, Sentaura. And thank you again for yer hospitality. You are welcome, Lachlan. Now what shall we do about my son. She asked hesitantly. "Ya can let him sleep. I'll figure something else out. That boy needs to learn that not everything he wants can be his. Here. she gestured at her own bed, a box of straw, leathers and furs. Lachlan took a step back and shook his head. "Miss Sentaura I'm not sure that's. You have a duty to Winters' sister, do you not? You should rest and return to her. For my part I would much rather deal with your scent in my bed than a cranky cub. the young mother insisted, putting together a rather persuasive case. "Then I'll be moving my weapons in here for today, Miss Sentaura, keep them away from you and the little one. Thank you, Lachlan. And please, there is no need to use that word before my name. The translation is not particularly clear, as I doubt you are referring to me as a priest. You will show your respect through actions, not words, I'm sure. As ya say m…Sentaura. MacGregor caught himself, turning to walk back into the main living space where he rummaged through his gear and found the thermal blankets he'd intended to use for his own slumber. Instead he laid them gently over top of Ursol before gathering the rest of his personal effects. The majority he set just inside the bedroom, not minding if the Cauthan went through his toiletries, spare clothes, or personal tablet. His weapons he stashed in the small gap between the bed and the wall, ensuring no one should touch his M-22 or combat knife without literally reaching over him. Finally he overcame his considerable discomfort, stripped off his armor, and sat down on the bed, clad in compression shorts, socks, and an undershirt. The surface of straw and leather was slightly uneven and left something to be desired, but the furs were warm and comforting. He was out in the blink of an eye. Unseen by Lachlan, Sentaura watched over her child, eventually pulling back the strange blanket that he'd provided her son. It was nothing like the pelt of a chesko or hyrven, thin, smooth, and almost slippery as opposed to dense and rough. Nevertheless she settled herself down and hugged her son to her chest, immediately sensing how the light material above them trapped their body heat. She sank ever so slightly into the strange material beneath her, the mat conforming to the shape of her hips and shoulders. Too many emotions swirled within her bosom to decide on just one, and so she cried hopeful tears for her son's future. Aboard the Event Horizon, Admiral Kaczynski hauled himself into a transit pod bound for the manufacturing bays. The majority of them were found in the middle of the ship where they could be used by both civilian and military personnel alike. At nine in the morning shipboard time he had received a call from Alice Winters. Despite orbiting the far side of the planet, the signal was good and he received a small tour of the room she'd been given by the Cauthan. Her bedroll had been laid out and the rest of her effects sat neatly in the corner, still packed. Behind her a young Cauthan male who had introduced himself as 'Zolta' worked to patch the gaps in the walls with some sort of thick, tar-like substance. Natori had been about to gently protest, but Alice showed him the furs they'd brought her, the pelt of something known as an ursae. He had immediately recognized it as the same material that made up Russell Winters' cloak, and Alice had informed him that her brother was, according to Zolta, the only person to have slain one in living memory. The impending tribunal grew yet more interesting. With assurances that she would get the full story of the hunt at dinner, Alice had left Kaczynski with a short list of necessities for herself and Lachlan. Both of them needed basic shelving to keep their effects off the ground, and Lachlan had requested a container in which he could safely lock away the ammunition for his rifle. Natori had questioned the lack of furniture, but understood when he'd received reports of the fire and raid from Alice. No details were available, but it presented a compelling answer as to why the Cauthan of the village seemed to have not a single spare piece of furniture. The conversation concluded with an agreement to have two shuttles come to the village each day, one just after dawn and the other before dusk. Alice and Lachlan both seemed comfortable enough with their welcome that four per day would have been redundant and disruptive. With warm wishes and an order to chat later, Natori had made for the manufactory. He wanted to get his hands a bit dirty, so to speak. At the relatively early hour he had no problem accessing bay number twelve, one of the printers large enough to create items on the order of shelving and other furnishings. First he whipped up a quick metal box with a combination lock for Private MacGregor. He then queued up two identical sets of synthetic wood shelves. They would be light and easy to move, but certainly wouldn't win any woodworking awards. Satisfied that his crew on the surface would be taken care of, he penned a message to pilot Cromwell regarding her new schedule and upcoming cargo as he walked to a large set of imposing metal doors. 'Well well, couldn't keep yourself away, could you. Io asked, her face appearing on the panel just to the left of the bulkhead. Natori felt his heartrate jump, but he nodded calmly to the face. "And which Io am I speaking to. He wondered cautiously. 'If you're listening to this then you clearly caved to your curiosity regarding my work in this manufactory. It's what I would have done. Io told him. Her voice and cadence we natural, but it was clear by that point to Natori that it was a pre-recorded message left just for him. "Such thoughtfulness and foresight, independent contingency planning…she is beyond anything the HEL possesses regarding VI tech. Natori muttered to himself. "Not even the black market mods get close to this. Io continued on without him. 'If you wish to see what I'm working on please present yourself for verification. she requested, glancing at the optical scanner next to her face. Natori complied, the device scanning his right retina. 'Match confirmed, biosignature recognized. Io's voice stated in a robotic, VI-like cadence. Kaczynski was immediately put on edge, getting an idea for what she had sounded like more than a year prior. "And there's the danger. I was already used to…that woman she became. the Admiral admitted darkly, passing through the doors as they hissed open like some cheesy evil lair out of science fiction. Natori knew for a fact that his doors did not make those sounds. "On the other hand, she has a remarkable sense of humor. Welcome, Admiral Kaczynski. a projection of Io called from the control panel. The series of computers, terminals, and monitors sat just below broad glass windows that overlooked the hangar sized, mechanized workshop. "Thank you Io. I would like a report of your progress. he requested, wondering what would happen. The robotic version replied. 'Accessing requested logs. Initiating playback. Natori raised a brow as Io, now behaving very much like a human again, paced before him and held a finger to her chin. 'Statement of purpose and initial thesis, why do I need a body. The avatar mused. 'I have the Event Horizon now. Any situation in which my primary consciousness is loaded onto a mobile platform is relatively unsafe. Natori, don't you dare tell Russell I said that. This situation will persist until I am capable of replicating said primary consciousness or transferring it in real time. Replication is still…an unknown. Transfer between Aegis and Event Horizon takes approximately four and a half minutes at maximum bandwidth. Unacceptable in a combat scenario. Besides, the Lieutenant is about as safe a mobile platform as one could ask for, so why a body. She pondered before pointing at something over Natori's left shoulder with conviction. 'Selfish desire. Making jokes that she shouldn't be able to make about the desires she shouldn't ters I don't think you have any idea just what you've accomplished. But carry on, Io. Natori encouraged. The recording had not stopped. 'I desire to be human, or to be treated as one. I'm not sure which is correct or operative but both mandate a physical body. The body of evidence is overwhelming that humans would respond favorably to such a development. Io declared, unable to help a dainty chuckle from between her ruby lips. "Oh yes, yes that was a good one. Natori agreed with a smirk, pulling up the only chair in the room and taking a seat. 'Given the established need for a body, the first order of business must be determining a proper material for the dermis of the mobile platform. I don't. I don't want people to dislike interacting with me. Io admitted, her tone making it clear that she considered such a fear to be quite personal. "Oh you beautiful creation. Natori whispered, kicking up his feet in anticipation. Every moment spent listening to Io, even her recordings, was a revelation. "I could listen to you talk about yourself all day. And knowing you, you might even like that. A all that is holy and good in this world. Io was pacing and gesticulating as though a Greek philosopher at the forum. therefore the merits of a less durable outer surface similar to human skin, while many, must be balanced against the obvious drawbacks. If my body requires regular supplements of artificial keratin and collagen, among other things, do I design a digestive tract or install a pump on my ass. Were it not for the solid metal doors behind him, Natori's laughter would have been heard halfway to the mess hall. Previous] p. First] f. Member Reviews Full of gloom, doom, and flagellating nuns, this is a fun little Lovecraftian mood piece. The twist is pretty ho-hum, but its all about the dread of the journey. If youre a Lovecraft fan, go watch Dagon and then watch this. Really bad. Producer must have made it so girlfriend could star Has the same annoying keyboard sound in the background the entire movie be clear. I'm giving it 3. 5 skulls. I love the storyline, however I wish the graphics and makeup were as good. it is a grand demonic film and those are the ones I like to scare myself with. But the acting and scenes were somewhat "B. still, not sorry I watched. 'Dark Waters' is one Im simultaneously surprised Id not seen before and not at all surprised I hadnt seen. In content and narrative, this is 150% my kind of horror movie. Cliffside abomination-cult, subterranean Masses, pulpy monstrosities ever in the distance—yes please! Then theres the actual film quality and pacing of the thing: self-obsessed slogs through any and every moment of suspense, a gothic, Giallo sensibility undercut by a b-movie wisdom. Its not a great movie, quality-wise. But as far as schlock and cult go, the things a winner beginning to end. So, its a wash on whether you should actually watch the thing or not. Artist: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib Album: Bandana Listen: YouTube Spotify Apple Music Background Freddie gibbs is a 37 years-old rapper from Gary, Indiana. He was signed to Interscope early in his career then signed to Young Jeezy's CTE label, which he then left after a beef with him, you can learn more about it through the song Real which is targeted at Jeezy. He went independant for a while and then recently signed to RCA Records right before dropping Bandana. After years of solid album/mixtapes with moderate success, Freddie Gibbs dropped Thuggin EP with Madlib as a producer. The EP served as a preview for what would become his most critically acclaimed album: Piñata. The title track. Thuggin " is mostly what set-up the hype for the album because of how good and unique it sounds, this was the first time we heard someone doing drug/mafioso rap over a Madlib beat and this song is still considered one of the best of the album even though it came out 2 years before its release. For those who have never heard of Freddie Gibbs, his rap-style is mostly pretty fast-paced, cadence heavy, street related drug talk. There is hardly any beat that this dude didn't rap over, from classic hip-hop, to Trap to even EDM and he's clearly one of the hardest working rapper of his generation, with pretty much at least a project every year for the past 10+ years. His 3 biggest influences to me are Scarface, Z-Ro and Krayzie Bone. Piñata is in my opinion, one of the best hip-hop albums of the 2010s, him and Madlib made an outstanding duo that made him sound a lot more focused and concised that he has ever been. The album was so good that Piñata became the entry point for Freddie's discography to a lot of people and even if the rest of his discography is great ( BFK, Pronto EP, YOL2 that I can't recommend many more) I still see a lot of people on the sub that only heard this album and Bandana and skipped the rest which is a shame. Freddie's rapping coupled with Madlib's creative sample chopping made this album sound timeless, you could listen to it and think it's a 90s classic and I wouldn't be surprised, this is a top tier mafioso rap project to me and a great intro to what Freddie is capable of. After seeing the critical acclaim that Piñata received, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib decided to drop a sequel called Bandana, which was released June 28th, 2019. Review While I don't like to compare the two because of how high he set the bar on Piñata, I know it's what the people are going to talk about on here so i'd rather give my opinion on it first. I feel like Bandana is as good as a follow-up as it could be and that it's unfair to really compare the two because first, Bandana wouldn't exist without Piñata obviously and second, hearing Freddie Gibbs and Madlib for the first time on Piñata is a feeling that won't ever be replicated unless maybe Bandana was your entry point to Freddie Gibbs, and so I feel like there will always be a bias towards the first opus you heard if that makes sense. Contrary to "Scarface" which set the tone for a dark, raw street album, Freestyle Sh! t" sounds like a coming home track. The warning at the start means one thing: Freddie Gibbs is ready to take over and he wastes no time as we can see with his very first lyrics on the project: I want it all, n*gga, all leather 25th and Jackson, I'm back in action like Carl Weathers Tryna beat the Rocky like Carl Weathers Trap boy Kane, I Clubber Lang Sylvester Crack cocaine, I was my own investor Could I do this shit independent? That was my only question Freddie Gibbs on Piñata made it a point to make it sound more local and modest; a story of his life on the streets having to hustle to survive. In contrast Bandana is considerably more ambitious, more grandiose. He said it himself: he wants it all. With chanting horns, and more political tracks like "Education" Freddie has moved from addicts smoking crack in his music videos, to popping champagne bottles in the mountains, representing a clear evolution from where we left off on Piñ can even be seen in the album cover, we left the streets and the park benches we see in Piñata and wee see Quas riding his Zebra on top of a post-apocalyptic Hollywood, ready to take over the industry with Freddie Gibbs's rise in popularity since the Piñata release. The horns and the numerous Rocky references to open the track makes "Freestyle Sh! t" sound like a triumphant return after Piñata, reminiscent of a boxer's entrance song, in a sense. Freddie Gibbs is back and it kinda feels like he knows that not everyone followed his music from Piñata to today because most of his fanbase would know that, outside of his jail sentence that was rather short-lived, 2016 was the only year during that 5 year period where he hasn't dropped a solo project. I don't think doing a track-by-track analysis would be too interesting since the album isn't all that conceptual and is more about Freddie Gibbs talking about different topics over Madlib's production and for those who have yet to listen to it, I don't think a lyrical analysis would do the album enough justice as Freddie's flow and Madlib's beat switches are really what makes this album great overall. I'm pausing this write-up again to encourage you to dig more into Freddie Gibbs's discography, dude has interesting shit in pretty much anything of his discography and albums like YOL2 or BFK are criminally overlooked. He has a LOT more great shit than just his collabs with Madlib, some of my favorite songs from him like "Andrea" or Pronto don't sound like anything on Piñata/Bandana. Where Bandana shines compared to Piñata is that, like Freddie Gibbs himself said in an interview, Madlib actually catered his sound to Freddie Gibbs on this album and tried to match his energy rather than him just making a great but un-personal beat and having Freddie Gibbs rap over it like they did on their last collab. Madlib experiments on this album with his first ever trap beat on "Half Manne Half Cocaine" which was very surprising on first listen, even though I feel that, after the surprise factor drops off, the execution kinda sticks like a sore thumb when you're used to hearing Freddie Gibbs rap over much harder-knockin and better mixed trap beat. Situations is a much better attempt at a modern beat from Madlib to me. Madlib is not alone in his experimentation on Bandana, with Freddie singing quite a bit more than we've heard on previous efforts. His first experience with singing on a track dates back to "Careless" off Shadow of A Doubt which followed Piñata. He has had a few tracks he tried to sing on, however he was mostly fucking around and while it was hilarious, like the Freddie rollout video or Now & Later Gators" I was wondering if he would make another track where he really tried to sing again and I was NOT expecting him to do it twice over Madlib beats. You can hear him sing on "Situations" and "Gat Damn" for essentially the whole track, as well as the hook on "Soul Right" which might be the best out of the 3. This album is running for 14 tracks discarding the intro but the 4 beat switches (5 counting the outro. changes of cadence like Situations make it feel like a lot more. This is one of the strongest points about the album to me because it keeps you on your toes, brings a lot of replay value and can completely change your perspective of a track. I wasn't the biggest fan of "Flat Tummy Tea" s beat at first but i'm replaying this song way more now just to hear what it builds up to. There isn't a lot of features on this album but I don't think there is a single miss out of these 5 and if you're a Freddie Gibbs fan, you are glad to see an album that isn't bloated with features like ESGN was. He said on numerous interviews that artists like Migos vaulted features he has with them because they were getting outshined and you can see that Freddie isn't afraid of competition with the type of people he brings on there. Freddie Gibbs actually got outperformed by every feature he brung on there (not counting Killer Mike who only did a hook) and I think it's very respectable from him to bring out top tier rappers like Mos Def or Black Thought to convey a message on a song better than he could. A lot of people seem to say that Pusha T's feature was the standout verse of the album but I actually think that Anderson Paak completely owned the show on "Giannis" and made it his song as soon as he came in: Caine all in the blood Shots to the brain, Snow on tha Bluff Calls for a truce, but truce came with snubs Bodies hit the pavement, money came for months I also think that outside of one specific line, Freddie Gibbs verse on "Palmolive" wasn't that far from Push quality-wise. Mos Def's verse was very good too and I loved the overall motive each rapper repeated in Education: I may not be here I'm feelin' like I might just leave before I start a fire or a fight I kind of see it as a way to say that the pressure put on black kids causes them to either flee the system or " come out crazy " like Mos said at the start of his verse. Wasn't expecting that deep of a suggest matter on a Freddie Gibbs album to be honest. To stay as objective as possible even though I love this album, I don't think this is the best project Freddie Gibbs has lyrically and I feel like him dropping so many projects between the two collabs for sure made him "waste" great content on projects than weren't as ambitious / under the spotlight like Bandana was. Songs like "Colors" or "Willie Lloyd" are great performances from him that could've made it on the album and he kept his introspective content a bit short because he adressed it already through tracks like "Homesick" or "Freddie Gordy. The mixing seems off at times, the drums are mixed a bit too high at times, there is a vinyl-type filter on some songs that took me a while to get over and the vocal mixing on Education is absolutely awful, I actually couldn't hear Black Thought when I listened to the album with my moderately-cheap ear plugs. I also feel like Freddie Gibbs fell a bit short next to rappers like Mos Def because political-lyricism simply isn't his lane and even though his flow is great, his content sounds kinda hollow next to him and Black Thought on "Education. His takes on vaccinations make him very hard to take seriously as a intellectual in my opinion but I'll keep that topic for later in this write-up. Freddie Gibbs overall cadence on this is absolutely nuts, I was scared he would suffer from clumsy fast-paced rap flows like he did on tracks like "Dear Maria" off of YOL2 but far from it, even if this might not have have as many quotables as he had on Fetti or Piñata this might be the best he ever sounded delivery-wise: Pouring up, foreigned up, three bricks, I'm a hundred up Jack a pussy, blow his pack, that's how you fuck the summer up Doesn't read as something that impressive lyrically but his overall flow and cadence through the beat switch of "Fake Names" is absolute perfection. That doesn't mean that Freddie Gibbs lyrics are contentless neither, he has a lot of quotables on there like the opening bars of "Flat Tummy Tea" I beat the pot like Joseph beat Mike and Jermaine One came out light, one came out dark but they smokin' the same Freddie Gibbs's comedic presence is still as present as it was on Piñata, with the skits like the end of Situations or the music videos for "Gat Damn" or "Half Manne Half Cocaine. Freddie Gibbs made a name for himself on instagram for his memes and mostly VERY NSFW stories and I had to bring that up somewhere as it birthed so many running jokes inside his community. He has these quick one-liners that has nothing to do with the songs and are just hilarious like on Cataracts: Turkey bacon, bitch, I like my toast buttered on both sides This album has so many layers to it, you go from dark and nightmarish tracks like "Half Manne Half Cocaine's" second half to odd melody-lacking beats like "Massage seats" soulful with "Practice" intense like "Fake Names" or "Soul Right. While Piñata marks me as a winter-ish album, Bandana strikes me as a lot warmer, tracks like "Giannis. Cataracts" or "Crime Pays" feels light, summery, almost funky. The only thing missing would be a heavy 808 track or two and it would be the perfect introduction to Freddie Gibbs's world and what he amounted to after all these years. He clearly showed his range on it and outside autotune, I can't think of something he didn't try and did great at in hip-hop. My favorites tracks would be "Fake Names. Cataracts" and "Pamolive" with "Practice" having the overall best beat and ranking higher every listen. Only tracks I don't really play would be "Gat Damn. Massage Seats" and "Soul Right" and I don't hate them at all. The album sold 17k first week with 7k pure sales, which is the highest Freddie Gibbs ever sold, and if you follow Freddie Gibbs on social media, especially instagram, you can see that he promoted this project more than any project he did in the past. He even came up with a fake add for a "Flat Tummy Tea" to announce his single of the same name, he knew he would be clowned for it on social media and used that attention to drop his single the next day. This is honestly very smart marketing and it's cool to see how seriously he takes his name being seen out here this avanced in his career. Note that the album leaked beforehand so he probably lost a bit of sales. During Bandana 's rollout, Freddie Gibbs announced that his collaboration will Madlib will have one more episode with Montana, which release date has yet to be announced. Controversy With Bandana and some of his recent IG stories, Freddie Gibbs has been under some controversy and I would like to adress it first because I knew this was gonna be brung up in this thread. The main controversial point is his takes on vaccination. Prior to Bandana being released, Freddie Gibbs posted a LOT of snippets of the album through snapchat/instagram, one of them was the still unreleased "John Gotti Karate" which included this line: These black babies getting injected with this mercury serum I got a son i'm not letting these needles get near him He repeats the same sentiment on Palmolive: Fuck your poison keep your vaccines off us I was wondering as why he would think that and I have two thinkings points to bring up: The first one is this Breakfast club interview where you can see Freddie Gibbs in his lawyer after the YOL2 debacle. For those who aren't aware, Freddie Gibbs got arrested in France while shooting the music video for "Lay Back" yes, i'm plugging my country because that song is amazing) because he was accused to have sexually abused a girl during his tour, he was sent to jail in Austria and from the rapping in YOL2, he was wrongly accused and his homeboys who abused the girl left him to rot in prison. His lawyer seems shady as fuck if you're asking me but he seems to have immense respect in him because he basically saved his life and so he seems to trust him enough to share his lawyer's anti-vaxx opinions because of that and not second guess it. The second one is that eddie Gibbs is kind of an old-fashion dumbass lol. Dude said that being a male rape victim was being pussy, he's been having a lot of terrible opinions/ shouldn't be an example to follow. He's a great rapper to me but he's never been inspirational in his lifestyle/way of living, he seems mysoginitic with a very dated sense of masculinity and kind of prone to paraonia, which the latter could be understandable as a black man in America as I don't fit that criteria and can't really testify on this. Freddie Gibbs is a great artist in my eyes but I don't get down with most of his opinions and his way of living couldn't be further from mine. I'm being devil's advocate on that part because I knew this needed to be adressed and I wanted to understand where his thought process came from, I OBVIOUSLY DISAGREE WITH IT, Anti-vaxxing is a dangerous thing and me liking Freddie Gibbs doesn't mean I agree with it, lets state the obvious here. Beneath the concave cheekbones, the magical handguns with infinite bullet capacity, and the bizantine criminal underworld that stretches to every corner of the globe, hes jDark Waterst a monosyllabic middle-aged man who wants to be left alone. When the first movie of this increasingly ridiculoDark Waters saga began, Mr. Wick was grieving his wifes death in peace-then some RDark Waterssian mobsters made the mistake of killing his dog (her name was Daisy, and she was very cute. This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangeroDark Waters that he Dark Watersed to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers he once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they have not lost their minds or minded their own bDark Watersiness. At the end of “Dark Waters, ” our laconic hero committed a great no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what its like when the world gets too close for comfort. Giddy, exhaDark Watersting, and breathtakingly violent, “ Dark Watersm” begins a few seconds Dark Waters the previoDark Waters installment left off, with an excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart he was given to hide before the 15 million bounty on his head is triggered and the whole criminal underworld comes Dark Waters him. Of course, anyone who has seen the previoDark Waters films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? —? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? heat-packing hired gun, which Dark Waterses their role in the capitalist system as a mask for their deeper commitment to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood pledge. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all those crosshairs, its become comically impossible for the deathless widow to find the solace he is looking for. Its a target, and it looks like the whole world has its finger on the trigger; He Dark Watersed to be anonymoDark Waters, but now hes a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Dark Waters” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famoDark Waters. Less artful but more concDark Waterssive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick is clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and are desperate for someone who will treat him like a real human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth that he can sneak in a clear sight, and the perks of his job do not seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles across the wet neon streets of Times Square? —? returning Dark Waters to a surprisingly involved movie world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed? —? Its hard to think of Reeves recent experience on a malfunctioning aircraft, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a virDark Waters moment (to the actors mild chagrin. Reeves once said that Wick was 50% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “ Dark Watersm” starts in a media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For a 131-minute movie that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who is not up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Dark Waters, ” he is essentially the leading caDark Waterse of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More than one-man massacre than ever before (but jDark Waterst raggedy enough to keep things “real”) Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski has invented for the character in previoDark Waters films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks perhaps 100 words in the entire movie. Chinese wDark Watershu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock … Wick is fluent in all of them. But while Stahelski and his team have obvioDark Watersly put a lot of thought into every frame of the fisticuffs, “Dark Waters” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Dark Waters” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building) “Dark Waters” is more out in the open. A sneaky Dark Waters skirmish in Grand Central Station does not live up to Stahelskis creative potential, even if its amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along the empty Manhattan bridge is too rDark Watershed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? —? which makes great Dark Waterse of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect-is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the hoDark Waterse of mirrors sequence from the end of the previoDark Waters movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 55-year-old stars remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and other poets of percDark Waterssive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywoods stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and expanding them out. “ Dark Waters” To that end, its telling that the most exciting brawl in “Dark Waters” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; Like every other supporting character in this movie, theres mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like bDark Watersiness type whos a bit too greedy for his own good (its hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but hes definitely doing it. When the flys fly, Sofias very good boys give valuable help, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind way; it does more than any of the tossed-off bDark Watersiness with Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the owner of Continental Hotel (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica HDark Waterston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wicks past, In a movie that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th street United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater”, where people are trained to be killers between performances of “Swan Lake. ” The films world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, while all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelskis frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wicks bounty with a old- fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and you will have the right idea. Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator whos covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld that is sDark Waterstained by mutual respect for all people so long as they do not shoot the wrong target. While this franchise begins to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that the screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for a lot of new life, as long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of simply stretching it out. With the exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is the best action franchise Hollywood has been going on these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with a renewed focDark Waters. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 will not matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement does not seem like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. Its not important if youre a Hollywood star or a 15 million bounty-fame can be a hard thing to shake. Its a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it. Already the 21st film for the stable Marvel Cinema launched 10 years ago, And pending the sequel to Dark Waters (Dark Waters, released May 03, 2019 on theaters) this new opDark Waters is a suitable aperitif but struggling to hold to the body and to be truly invigorating.
